After you have read Herbert Kohl’s “The Story of Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott Revisited,” write a 2-3 page (typed, double-spaced) paper discussing the limitations of the “Rosa was tired” narrative that is commonly taught in elementary schools in the United States. What different kinds of problems does Kohl point to with regard to that narrative? How do you think that teaching white children the “Rosa was tired” narrative might affect their racial awareness and understanding? How do you think that teaching black and brown children the “Rosa was tired” story might affect their experience of schooling? How do you think that interracial relations between students might be affected by this kind of story? Explain your reasoning.
