There are three major forms of Glyph D, “birth frog,” “hand”
and “ni-hi-ya,” a form used for lunar ages between 10 and 19.
Glyph E is simply an alternate glyph for 20, which explains why
a frequent variant of lunar age glyphs is “number-E-D.”
However, some scribes didn’t bother with the D verb at all when
recording ages of 20 or greater days, leaving the reader to understand
that an inscription such as “5 E” meant that the moon was
25 days old.
